In 4 to 16 Characters, Jane only feels at peace when she’s near a computer. She cuts class to hit fandom message boards on the computer lab, and brings her laptop to therapy. When she’s online, she can be anyone she wants to be. She can be Rachel, a well liked college student, or an emo recovering drug addict named Ethan.
She doesn’t have to be a lonely teenager whose mom just died, and whose dad is always drunk. The internet is better than her real life. Maybe she’s not the most likeable character, and I don’t blame her one bit.
Let me tell you something. There are thousands of teenagers like Jane. When I was a junior my parents shut off the internet at 9 PM otherwise I wouldn’t go to sleep. For someone whose entire life is a raw nerve, the internet is the safest place to go. You don’t have to tell people in you’re hurting, and that pesky body language will never give you away. If shit gets too real, delete your account and walk away.
4 to 16 Characters is an epistolary novel, and all the text takes place in online formats. Chatlogs, “recirclr” posts (the novel’s version of tumblr), and ao3 fanfics. This format works, because if Jane had her choice, her entire life would be on the internet, so I don’t feel like anything is left out.
Kelly Hourihan understands what she is writing about, which is hella refreshing frankly. The novel would not work if she didn’t understand how fandoms and online friendships work. Conversely, readers who aren’t familiar with up to date internet culture (“LOL = laugh out loud” won’t cover it) might have a hard time getting engaged in the plot.
4 to 16 Characters is totally unique. I haven’t come across a book anything like it.

As I was getting ready to toss out my July issue of the USF Alumni magazine, I saw the ad for USF St. Pete’s online MPA program. Although I wanted to get into the MBA program at USF S-M I decided it was best to go for the MPA program. It just fit into my life better than the USF S-M program would. Plus they are a lot more flexible. See ya later Sarasota!
